Ski hire in La Plagne means renting ski equipment (skis or a snowboard, plus ski boots, ski poles and a helmet if you need them) from a rental shop in one of La Plagne’s villages, from Plagne Centre up at altitude to Montchavin and Les Coches lower down. Last season, our customers paid a median of €64 for six days of intermediate skis and boots in La Plagne, which works out at under €11 a day.

La Plagne is one of the busiest French resorts on alpy.com: our partner shops across its villages handled more than 4,600 bookings last winter. We used those bookings to work out what ski hire in La Plagne really costs, which village to rent in, and how to keep the bill down.

The short version: La Plagne is one of the best-value places to rent skis in the French Alps. A week of intermediate skis and boots costs about 20% less than the French median, and almost three quarters of our customers here rent for the whole week.

Ski hire La Plagne prices: how much does it cost?

Most people in La Plagne rent for a full week, so that’s where our data is strongest. Here’s what customers paid for six days last season, per person. Our rental grades run from Blue/Bronze (beginner) to Platinum (expert).

Rental grade Best for 6 days, skis and boots 6 days, skis only
Blue/Bronze Beginners, green and easy blue runs €50 –
Red/Silver Intermediates on blues and reds €64 €41
Black/Gold Confident skiers on reds and blacks €74 €43
Platinum Fast, technical skiers – €76

Median price paid per person on alpy.com at partner shops in the La Plagne villages last season. Includes the booking service fee, excludes optional protection and helmets. “–” means too few bookings to report a reliable figure.

Two things stand out. First, the prices are low: €64 for a week of intermediate skis and boots is about 20% below the French median of €80 for the same package. Second, the step up to a better ski is small. Black/Gold skis with boots cost just €10 more than Red/Silver for the week, and beginner Blue/Bronze equipment cost €50.

Booking online also matters here. On the median La Plagne booking, the online price was 48% below the shop’s own in-store price, compared with 41% across France.

Where are the ski rental shops in La Plagne?

alpy.com has partner shops across the La Plagne villages and the surrounding area. You can browse all of them, compare their benefits, prices and availability, and book online on alpy.com.

Alpy Tip: La Plagne is a group of villages at different altitudes, so check which village your accommodation is in before you book, not just “La Plagne”. Moving between villages with skis is possible but tiresome.

Which skis suit the La Plagne ski area?

La Plagne has around 225 km of pistes of its own, from about 1,250 m in Montchavin up to around 3,250 m on the glacier below the Bellecôte summit. The Vanoise Express cable car links it to Les Arcs, giving around 425 km of pistes in the combined Paradiski area. Much of the skiing in La Plagne is wide, open and well suited to intermediates and families, with plenty of tree-lined runs down to the lower villages.

That’s why a Red/Silver ski is the right grade for most visitors. It’s forgiving on long cruising runs and still copes with firm snow on cold mornings. If you plan to spend time on the glacier or cross over to Les Arcs for steeper terrain, the small step up to Black/Gold is worth it. Match the grade to how you ski on firm snow, not on your best powder day. Our guide to what each ski rental grade really means explains the differences in plain terms.

Beginners don’t need to overthink it. A soft Blue/Bronze ski with boots cost €50 for six days. La Plagne’s high villages have gentle slopes close to the accommodation, so you can find your feet and change grade later if you progress quickly.

How much does snowboard hire cost in La Plagne?

Around 13% of our La Plagne bookings included a snowboard, but we didn’t have enough bookings of a single board grade with boots to publish a reliable local median.

Across France last season, a snowboard with boots cost a median of €82 for six days, against €80 for intermediate skis and boots. So snowboard hire costs about the same as ski hire, and price shouldn’t decide between the two. The local partner shops rent boards as well as skis, and you can see exact snowboard prices for your dates when you search for your village.

What else adds to the cost?

A few extras come up at the counter. Here’s what they cost and how often our La Plagne customers chose them:

  • A helmet. The most important piece of safety kit on the mountain. Around 35% of La Plagne bookings included a rental helmet. If you don’t have your own, add one to your booking rather than buying one for a single week.
  • ALPINGUARANTY (breakage and theft waiver): 15% of the rental price, so around €10 on a €64 week. About 36% of our La Plagne customers added it. It covers skis, boards, boots, helmets and poles.
  • ALPINSAFETY (personal injury and rescue cover): €1.35 per person per day.
  • ALPINFLEXI (cancellation protection): 5% of the rental price. Every booking already includes free cancellation until the day before.

How to pay less for ski hire in La Plagne

  1. Book online, not at the counter. On the median La Plagne booking, the online price was 48% below the shop’s in-store price, compared with 41% across France.
  2. Book the whole week. Most people already do: the median rental in La Plagne was six days, and 73% of customers booked six days or more.
  3. Book ahead. La Plagne customers plan early. The median booking was made 15 days before the rental started, and only 16% booked within two days of arrival. In school holiday weeks, booking two weeks ahead gives you the widest choice of shops, sizes and grades.

When we last checked, none of the partner shops in La Plagne listed a free child offer, so budget for every child’s equipment from the start.
