Rental skis in a wooden rack on a piste above a wide Tyrolean valley with a gondola and snowy peaks

Ski hire in Mayrhofen means renting ski equipment (skis or a snowboard, plus ski boots, ski poles and a helmet if you need them) from a rental shop in Mayrhofen or one of the neighbouring villages in the Zillertal valley. Last season, our customers paid a median of €100 for six days of intermediate skis and boots in Mayrhofen, and €24 for a single day.

Mayrhofen is one of the best-known ski towns in Tyrol, and the partner shops in the village handled more than 5,600 bookings on alpy.com last winter. We used those bookings to work out what ski hire in Mayrhofen really costs, where to pick up your gear, and how to keep the bill down.

The short version: Mayrhofen is good value. A week of intermediate skis and boots costs about a quarter less than the Austrian median, and most of our customers rent for the whole week.

Ski hire Mayrhofen prices: how much does it cost?

Here’s what customers paid in Mayrhofen last season, per person, for skis with boots. Our rental grades run from Blue/Bronze (beginner) to Platinum (expert).

Skis and boots 1 day 3 days 6 days
Blue/Bronze (beginner) – – €87
Red/Silver (intermediate) €24 €62 €100
Black/Gold (good skier) – €83 €127
Platinum (expert) – – –

Median price paid per person on alpy.com at partner shops in Mayrhofen last season. Includes the booking service fee, excludes optional protection and helmets. “–” means too few bookings to report.

Two things stand out. First, the week is the better deal: six single days of intermediate skis and boots would add up to €144, against €100 for a six-day package. That’s about 31% less per day. Second, Mayrhofen’s €100 is about 25% below the Austrian median of €133 for the same package. For a resort this well known, that’s a pleasant surprise.

Which skis suit the Mayrhofen ski area?

Mayrhofen’s own ski area has around 142 km of pistes, between 630 m and about 2,500 m. Most of it sits on the Penken side, which links to Horberg, Rastkogel, Eggalm and Finkenberg. Across the valley, the Ahorn has wide, gentle slopes that suit beginners and families. Half of the pistes are rated intermediate, so this is classic red-run skiing for most visitors.

Then there’s the Harakiri. With a gradient of 78%, it’s billed as Austria’s steepest slope, and it’s one of the reasons good skiers come here. The Ski Zillertal 3000 lift pass also covers the Hintertux Glacier, up to 3,250 m and reached by ski bus, giving more than 200 km of pistes in total.

For most people, a Red/Silver ski is the right rental grade. It’s forgiving on the long, rolling reds of the Penken and still holds an edge when the snow is firm. Confident skiers who plan a day on the glacier or a run down the Harakiri may want a Black/Gold ski instead. Last season it cost €27 more than Red/Silver for six days in Mayrhofen, and a stiffer ski feels much steadier on steep, icy ground.

Beginners should keep it simple. A soft Blue/Bronze ski with boots cost a median of €87 for six days. Start on the gentle slopes of the Ahorn and move up a grade once you feel ready. If you’re unsure where you fit, our guide explains what each ski rental grade really means.

How much does snowboard hire cost in Mayrhofen?

Snowboard hire in Mayrhofen costs a little more than ski hire. A mid-range (Red/Silver) snowboard with snowboard boots cost a median of €75 for three days last season and €114 for six days. That’s €14 more than intermediate skis and boots for the week.

Around 15% of our Mayrhofen bookings included a snowboard. Mayrhofen has a strong freestyle reputation, with a well-known terrain park on the Penken, and the local partner shops rent boards as well as skis.

What else adds to the cost?

A few extras come up at the counter. Here’s what they cost and how often our Mayrhofen customers chose them:

  • A helmet. The most important piece of safety kit on the mountain. Around 26% of Mayrhofen bookings included a rental helmet. If you don’t have your own, renting one for the week is the simple option.
  • ALPINGUARANTY (breakage and theft waiver): 15% of the rental price, so around €15 on a €100 week. About 42% of our Mayrhofen customers added it. It covers skis, boards, boots, helmets and poles.
  • ALPINSAFETY (personal injury and rescue cover): €1.35 per person per day.
  • ALPINFLEXI (cancellation protection): 5% of the rental price. Every booking already includes free cancellation until the day before.

How to pay less for ski hire in Mayrhofen

  1. Look for a free child offer. When we last checked, some partner shops in Mayrhofen and the Zillertal let two paying adults bring children up to age 10 free of charge. Conditions differ from shop to shop, so check the benefits when you compare if you have young kids.
  2. Book the whole week. A six-day package cost about 31% less per day than renting day by day. The median rental in Mayrhofen was six days, and 52% of customers booked six days or more.
  3. Book online, and a little ahead. The median customer booked eight days before arrival, and 26% booked within two days. Last-minute booking works, but booking a week or two ahead gives you the widest choice of shops, sizes and grades in the busy weeks.

Alpy Tip: The Hintertux Glacier runs close to year-round, while the Mayrhofen lifts open in early winter. If you’re planning an early-season trip to the Zillertal, check our Austria ski resort opening dates for 2026/27 before you book.
