Last season, our customers paid a median of €51 for three days of intermediate skis and boots in Chamonix, €19 for a single day and €85 for six days.

Chamonix, in Haute-Savoie at the foot of Mont Blanc, is one of the busiest ski resorts on alpy.com in France: our partner shops there handled more than 5,100 bookings last winter. We used those bookings to work out what ski hire in Chamonix really costs, where the shops are, and how to keep the bill down. This guide is for anyone planning a ski or snowboard trip to Chamonix, from first-timers and families to experienced skiers, and it covers prices by grade and rental length, shop locations, extras and ways to save.

The short version: Chamonix rentals are shorter than almost anywhere else. The median rental was four days, and only about a quarter of our customers rented for six days or more. Prices sit close to the French average, and more than half of our Chamonix customers added a helmet.

Ski hire Chamonix prices: how much does it cost?

Here’s what customers paid in Chamonix last season, per person, for skis with boots. Includes the booking service fee, excludes optional protection and helmets. “–” means too few bookings to report. Six-day figures are based on smaller samples than the three-day ones.

Two things stand out. First, a full week is still the better deal per day: six single days of intermediate skis and boots would add up to €114, against €85 for a six-day package, about 25% less per day. Second, Chamonix sits close to the French median of €80 for the same package. Booking online makes a real difference too: on the median Chamonix booking, the online price was 45% below the shop’s in-store price, compared with 41% across France.

For the bigger picture across Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland, see our ski hire price guide.

Why are ski rentals in Chamonix so short?

In most big French ski resorts we looked at, around 70% of customers rent for six days or more. In Chamonix it’s about 24%, and the median rental is four days. We can’t see why people book the way they do, but the shape of the valley offers some likely reasons.

Chamonix isn’t one linked ski area. It’s a string of separate areas along the valley: Brévent-Flégère above the town, Grands Montets above Argentière, Balme at Le Tour and Les Houches at the lower end of the valley. You reach them by bus or car rather than on skis, so many visitors mix ski days with other mountain sports and plans, from mountaineering and sightseeing on the Aiguille du Midi to a day or two off. Chamonix is also easy to reach from Geneva, which makes it popular for long weekends and short breaks.

If you’re only skiing a few days, renting for exactly those days makes sense. If you’re likely to ski most of the week, book the full six days: the per-day price drops by about a quarter.

Where are the ski rental shops in Chamonix?

alpy.com has partner shops in Chamonix, along the Mont Blanc valley and in the surrounding area. You can browse all of them, compare their benefits, prices and availability, and book online on alpy.com.

Which skis suit the Chamonix ski areas?

Chamonix has a reputation for steep, demanding skiing, and it’s well earned. Chamonix offers everything from high-altitude, north-facing terrain to gentle beginner slopes, and snow conditions vary a lot from one area to the next. Les Grands Montets is north-facing, high and known for long, sustained slopes. Brévent-Flégère faces south, with views straight across to Mont Blanc and runs for every level. Balme is gentler and suits mixed groups, while Les Houches is home to the Kandahar World Cup run as well as plenty of easier skiing.

For confident skiers heading to the Grands Montets or the steeper reds and blacks, Black/Gold is worth considering. Last season it cost €62 for three days with boots, €11 more than Red/Silver. Match the grade to how you ski on firm, steep snow, not on your best powder day. Our guide to what each ski rental grade really means explains the differences in plain terms.

Beginners should rent a soft Blue/Bronze ski, which cost €44 for three days with boots, and start on the gentler slopes at Balme, Les Houches or the beginner areas in the valley.

Safety first: the Vallée Blanche and Chamonix’s off-piste and freeriding terrain are high-mountain glacier routes, not pistes. Only go with a qualified mountain guide.

How much does snowboard hire cost in Chamonix?

Around 13% of our Chamonix bookings included a snowboard, but we didn’t have enough bookings of a single board grade with boots to publish a reliable local median.

Across France last season, a snowboard with boots cost a median of €82 for six days, against €80 for intermediate skis and boots. So snowboard hire costs about the same as ski hire, and price shouldn’t decide between the two. The local partner shops rent boards as well as skis, and you can see exact snowboard prices for your dates when you search for Chamonix.

What else adds to the cost?

You can rent all the equipment you need from one shop, but a few extras come up at the counter. Here’s what they cost and how often our Chamonix customers chose them:

A helmet. The most important piece of safety kit on the mountain. Around 52% of Chamonix bookings included a rental helmet, the highest share of all the resorts we looked at.

ALPINGUARANTY (breakage and theft waiver): 15% of the rental price, so around €8 on a €51 three-day rental. About 49% of our Chamonix customers added it. It covers skis, boards, boots, helmets and poles.

ALPINSAFETY (personal injury and rescue cover): €1.35 per person per day.

ALPINFLEXI (cancellation protection): 5% of the rental price. Every booking already includes free cancellation until the day before, which is handy in a valley where the weather can change your plans.

How to pay less for ski hire in Chamonix

Book online, not at the counter. On the median Chamonix booking, the online price was 45% below the shop’s in-store price.

Rent for the days you’ll actually ski, and go for the week if that’s most of them. A six-day package cost about 25% less per day than single-day rentals.

Book a few days ahead. The median Chamonix customer booked seven days before their rental started, and 28% booked within two days. Booking a week ahead gives you the widest choice of shops, sizes and grades in busy weeks.

When we last checked, none of the partner shops in Chamonix listed a free child offer, so budget for every child’s equipment from the start.

Alpy Tip: Still choosing between Chamonix and a big linked ski resort? Our guide to the best ski resorts in France compares Chamonix with Val d’Isère, Paradiski and Châtel.

FAQ

How much does ski hire cost in Chamonix?
Last season, intermediate skis and boots in Chamonix cost a median of €19 for one day, €51 for three days and €85 for six days, based on alpy.com bookings.
