Last season, our customers paid a median of €64 for six days of intermediate skis and boots in Tignes, and €36 for three days (there were too few single-day rentals to report a one-day price).

Tignes is one of the big names of the French Alps, and our partner shops there handled more than 3,900 bookings last winter. We used those bookings to work out what ski rental in Tignes really costs, where the shops are, which skis suit the Espace Killy and how to pay less.

The short version: Tignes is good value for a resort of its size and altitude. Intermediate skis and boots cost about 20% less than the French median, and the gap between online and counter prices is much wider here than the French average.

Ski hire Tignes prices: how much does it cost?

Here’s what customers paid in Tignes last season, per person, for skis with boots. First, the week is the better deal: two three-day rentals of intermediate skis and boots would cost €72, against €64 for a six-day package, about 11% less per day. Second, Tignes sits well below the French median of €80 for the same package, about 20% cheaper. Third, booking online makes a big difference here. On the median Tignes booking, the online price was 54% below the shop’s own in-store price, compared with 41% across France.

For the bigger picture across Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland, see our ski hire price guide.

Where are the ski rental shops in Tignes?

alpy.com has partner shops in Tignes and the surrounding area. You can browse all of them, compare their benefits, prices and availability, and book online on alpy.com.

Which skis suit the Tignes ski area?

Tignes shares the Espace Killy ski area with Val d’Isère, giving around 300 km of linked pistes. Skiing runs from 1,550 m in Les Brévières up to 3,456 m on the Grande Motte glacier, a vertical drop of about 1,900 m, and the main villages sit at around 2,100 m. That high-altitude location keeps the snow in good shape for a long winter, but it also means firm, sometimes icy snow on cold mornings and long, open slopes above the tree line.

That’s why the rental grade matters here. Our guide to what each ski rental grade really means explains the differences in plain terms. In short:

Blue/Bronze (€53 for six days with boots). Soft, forgiving skis for beginners on the gentler slopes close to the villages.

Red/Silver (€64). The right equipment for most intermediates exploring the entire ski area.

Black/Gold (€71). A stiffer ski that holds an edge on hard glacier snow and steep slopes. In Tignes it cost just €7 more than Red/Silver for six days, so for confident skiers heading up the Grande Motte or across to Val d’Isère, it’s an easy upgrade.

Platinum (€101). Top-end skis for experts who want the best performance on challenging descents.

Match the grade to how you ski on firm snow, not on your best powder day. Beginners don’t need to overthink it: rent a soft ski, find your feet, and change later if you progress quickly.

How much does snowboard hire cost in Tignes?

Around 14% of our Tignes bookings included a snowboard.

We didn’t have enough Tignes bookings of boards with snowboard boots to publish a local median. Across France, though, a snowboard with boots cost a median of €82 for six days, against €80 for intermediate skis and boots. So price shouldn’t decide between skiing and snowboarding. You book snowboard hire through the same partner shops as ski hire, and snowboard equipment can be collected in the same villages.

What else adds to the cost?

A few extras come up at the counter. Here’s what they cost and how often our Tignes customers chose them:

A helmet. The most important piece of safety kit on the mountain. Around 39% of Tignes bookings included a rental helmet. If you don’t have your own, add one to your booking.

ALPINGUARANTY (breakage and theft waiver): 15% of the rental price, so around €10 on a €64 week. About 49% of our Tignes customers added it, almost half. It covers skis, boards, boots, helmets and poles.

ALPINSAFETY (personal injury and rescue cover): €1.35 per person per day.

ALPINFLEXI (cancellation protection): 5% of the rental price. Every booking already includes free cancellation until the day before.

How to pay less for ski hire in Tignes

Book online, not at the counter. On the median Tignes booking, the online price was 54% below the shop’s in-store price. That’s well above the French median of 41%.

Book the whole week. A six-day package cost about 11% less per day than two three-day rentals. Most people already do this: the median rental period in Tignes was six days, and 69% of customers booked six days or more.

Book a week or two ahead. The median Tignes customer booked 13 days before their rental started, and 19% booked within two days. Late booking works, but stock is limited in peak weeks, so booking ahead gives you the widest choice of shops, sizes and grades.

One thing Tignes doesn’t have: when we last checked, none of the partner shops in Tignes listed a free child offer, so children’s equipment is charged separately.

Alpy Tip: Tignes and Val d’Isère share one lift system, so with an Espace Killy pass you can ski across in either direction. If you’re still deciding where to stay, our Val d’Isère resort guide covers the other side of the Espace Killy.

FAQ

How much does ski hire cost in Tignes?
Last season, intermediate skis and boots in Tignes cost a median of €36 for three days and €64 for six days, based on alpy.com bookings. Children’s equipment is charged separately, so the best ways to save are booking the full week online and booking a week or two before you arrive.

Tignes is one of the better-value places to rent skis in the French Alps. Book online, rent for the whole week, and consider a Black/Gold ski for the glacier and the firm, high-altitude snow: at €7 more than Red/Silver, it’s a small upgrade. Do that and ski hire becomes one of the easier parts of a Tignes ski holiday to sort out. Just remember that your ski pass is booked separately, as rental shops only rent equipment.

Ready to sort your ski or snowboard hire in Tignes? Compare Tignes partner shops and book your ski or snowboard rental now → Save up to 65% compared to walk-in resort prices, with free cancellation until the day before.
